bulletHow Do I...

volunteer in the community?

If you are interested in volunteering your time in the community, please contact the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service at: 315-443-3051 or visit their website. To volunteer specifically in the neighborhood east of Syracuse University's main campus, please contact our Office at 315-443-3919 or e-mail gcr@syr.edu.

get involved in government?

The office of Government and Community Relations encourages all students to be involved in the democratic process.

First, be sure you are registered to vote locally. Voter registration forms are available at the Office of Government and Community Relations, 2-212 Center for Science and Technology, and in locations on campus such as Schine Student Center, Goldstein Student Center, Bird Library, Hendricks Chapel (Noble Room) and the Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs. You may also download a PDF version of the Voter Registration Form from the New York State Board of Elections' website (http://www.elections.state.ny.us), and mail it to:

Onondaga County Board of Elections
John H. Mulroy Civic Center-15th Floor
421 Montgomery Street
Syracuse, New York 13202

Second, stay on top of the issues. Read a newspaper or check a national news web site every day. Write to your local, state, and national elected officials about what concerns you. Find local representatives' contact information here [link to federal and state legislators currently on site]. Or, find your hometown senators on the U.S. Senate website or House of Representatives website. If you are a New York State resident, find your assembly member and senator.

Finally, participate in Student Lobby Day. This is your chance to tell New York State legislators how important student aid programs like TAP, HEOP, C-STEP, and the Liberty Partnership Programs are to you. For more information about Student Lobby Day and how you can participate, call 443-3919.

contact SU regarding an off-campus situation?

If you have a concern that you would like to bring to SU's attention, please call our hotline at 315-442-CARE (2273). The CARE line is a non-emergency voice message system that is monitored daily. A staff member from the Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs or Office of Government and Community Relations will respond to you within two business days. If, however, you have an emergency situation that needs immediate attention, please always dial 911.
